Taking Stock of Great Hair

Once again, my alarm clock went off this morning just in time for me to hear the latest dismal news about stock markets in Japan and London. It's a terrible way to emerge from my much-needed beauty sleep. At work, the constant stream of updates about the US stock market on my MSN homepage leaves me so stressed out that I can't even enjoy reading the celebrity gossip of the day. I have to frequently remind myself that my worrying is not going to change the situation, and that I should focus only on that which I can control. More importantly, I must remember that too much stress will eventually affect the condition of my hair.

We are seeing this more and more at the salon. A client with normally healthy hair notices that each time she brushes or washes her hair lately, she's pulling out more strands than usual. We ask her three questions: Did you have a baby recently? Does this type of hair loss run in your family? Were you dealing with any stressful situations in your life three months ago? The last question more often than not reveals the root cause of the hair loss.

When we are stressed out, we tend to not take care of ourselves. We sleep less, eat poorly, maybe drink or smoke more. You can feel how this affects your body fairly quickly, but the effect on your hair takes a few months to manifest due to its growth cycle. The salon has treatments that can strengthen and repair your hair, and I like to use these treatments even when I'm not stressed out, as part of an overall healthy hair regimen. But looking at my calendar, I notice that three months puts us pretty close to New Years Eve. And that is my biggest incentive to not let current events stress me out. If there's one thing I can control, it's that I will celebrate the New Year with fabulous hair.
