Right around the time I told myself I would sit down and write a blog entry, I turned on the TV and saw that Oprah was featuring Dr. Oz and his new beauty book. Of course, I had to watch. The focus of the show was not beauty trends, however, but rather how all the things going on inside your body manifest themselves through your skin and hair. This is something I've written about before - how stress can affect your hair - but I was surprised to learn just how many internal issues are revealed on our outside. One of the guests they featured had lost a significant amount of hair in the past six months and couldn't figure out why, as she had not experienced any major stress or illness recently. Dr. Oz ran a blood test and found that she had elevated levels of allergies and hormones that warranted further tests.
This woman's story made me think about the fact that most of us see our hairdresser more frequently than we see our doctor. And in many cases, we tell our hairdressers more about what's going on in our lives than we do our doctors. It makes sense. When you sitting in a paper gown in a sterile room, the last thing you want to do is discuss what's been going on in your life over the past year. Compare this with someone playing with your hair, massaging your head, making you feel pampered and beautiful. Of course your stylist is going to know all the intimate details.
One of the things I love about the Rene Furterer line that we carry at the salon is that it uses essential oils to create and maintain a healthy hair and scalp. So if there is something going on with your hair, you can treat it rather than just cover it. Of course, if there is a more severe issue, you should see a doctor. But don't think that just because it's not a major problem that it can't be corrected. After all, fabulous hair is one of everyone's favorite things.
