Recessionista

It's the latest buzz word, essentially meaning to be frugally chic. Some say it's just common sense - hello, don't buy new stuff, use what you already have. And while this is true, recessionista means to use what you have, but in new ways. Let's face it, we're all used to wearing these pants with that shirt, it's easy and familiar. Look at your closet with a fresh pair of eyes, and dig out that stuff that has migrated to the back. I experienced this myself last week after rediscovering a jacket I had forgotten all about. I got so many compliments on it that I think I convinced myself it was brand new.

But enough about clothes, this blog is about hair. What exactly is recessionista hair? It is not suffering through bad hair days as you stretch out your appointments. There are in fact ways to pinch your pennies and still look fabulous. For example, try a multi-dimensional color so that your root line doesn't grow back so obviously. If gray roots are your challenge, try a cut and style that covers that pesky center part, or consider a partial color or highlight to cover just the gray. If your product junkie habit needs to be reigned in, go for a lower-maintenance cut that works with your natural texture and requires fewer touch-ups.

Speaking of products, recessionista does not mean using cheap products. It means using fewer products, but the right products. If you color your hair, use a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner. If you are outdoors a lot, use a sun-protection product to help prevent fading. And remember that healthy hair is attractive hair. A scalp treatment and/or a clarifying product will restore shine and body. Above all, keep in mind that recessionista is not depressionista. There is no need to be stressed about your hair at this time with so many creative options. Besides, stress is bad for your hair.
