American Idol

The number one topic of conversation at the salon this week has been Michelle Obama. She generally ranks high on the list, but this week we had both the "fashion summit" between her and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy as well as the Washington Post article about Mrs. Obama's hairdresser - finally revealed after months of speculation. The "Deep Throat" of our industry, to be sure. I find it all fascinating, mostly because I can't help but wonder "what would I do?"

What would I do if all of a sudden the outfit I pulled out of my closet each morning was subject to national scrutiny? What would I do if I had a host of designers available to me - would I choose based purely on aesthetics, or consider the nationality of the designer, the price, whether the fabric is eco-friendly and the seamstresses are paid a living wage? Would I be allowed to have a bad day hair, or would I need to send an advance team on all overseas trips to determine the pH level of the water so that I know which shampoo to bring?

Considering all this makes me admire the confidence with which Michelle Obama carries herself. For an accomplished woman, she must surely wonder sometimes why her strongest statements are often her fashion statements. And while I don't always agree with her fashion choices, I appreciate that she does make a statement. Not necessarily one of hemlines and patterns, but rather one of being confident and comfortable, unafraid to try new things but also knowing who you are. A statement that can apply to your clothes, your lifestyle, and even, yes, your hair.
