A Midsummer Night's...Highlight

We knew it was coming. No matter how much we tried to deny it, or hope that this year would be different, the inevitable summer lull is here. Every July through mid-August, business at the salon slows as clients are either away for the summer or off on vacation. But this seasonal downturn in business has a major upside in that this allows us more time to spend with our other clients. So often, when we're busy, it's easy to fall into the routine of "the usual" color and cut. But having some extra time provides a great opportunity for the stylists and clients to explore possibilities for fresh looks - from a subtle change in color to a different way to style "the usual" to a completely new cut. Further, it's great to have the time to discuss issues or concerns that clients may have about the health of their hair and which products they're using.

There is something about this time of year. Maybe because the summer lull presents us all with a chance to evaluate how the year is going so far, and to consider how plans and expectations have worked out. With everyone holding their breath for so long on the economy, clients are starting to come in ready to exhale, have a little fun, and try something new. As the trend shifts from blunt cuts to loose shags, easy curls, and an overall relaxed look, these new styles reflect the current social attitude. Plus, if you're stuck in town this summer instead of hitting the beach, the least you can do is look like you've been hanging in the Hamptons or strutting through South Beach. With a casually cool hair style and a little self-tanner, no one will know the difference.

Towards the end of August, things will begin to get more hectic as everyone is getting ready to go back to school and work. So I recommend taking advantage of this down time, and get more "bang" for your buck.
