Next weekend marks not only the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, but also a far more important milestone - the 5th year anniversary of Salon A! While the time has really flown by, in reflecting back upon the past five years, I realize how many invaluable lessons I've learned about running a small business, working with hairdressers, and disassembling printers to find the source of a paper jam.
We have certainly had our share of both good and bad hair days, figuratively speaking. But the thing I am most proud of is that we have continued to stay true to who we are and who we set out to be. Before we opened our doors, we wrote down our mission statement and our vision, and have used these words to guide every decision we have made since then. From product lines, to hiring employees, to marketing promotions, the first question - and sometimes also the last question - has always been whether our decision aligns with who we are.
I have also come to realize how important it is to have a mission statement for your hair. Okay, maybe a mission statement is a bit extreme, but the intent is to ensure that your hair reflects who you are. After five years, I still get excited when I see a client walk out the door with a hairstyle that completely suits her personality. And if I had a dollar for every time I heard a client say "I feel like me again" as she's checking out, well, I'd be writing this from my beach house.
This being said, sometimes who we are can evolve. Right now, we are evolving at the salon by introducing a new category of services. Construction is currently underway on a spa room, and we will soon be offering facials and massages. When we opened the salon, our goal was to focus on hair. Five years later, we are excited to be able to incorporate spa services into our vision without compromising our commitment to quality hair services. And, of course, our commitment to our wonderful, loyal clients, who have brought us this far. Cheers to you!
