Last week, Kaley Cuoco became the latest celebrity to debut a major haircut, going from long blonde layers to a choppy bob. I thought it looked fresh and cool, and it got me thinking about a trend that seems to have staying power, and with good reason. I wrote last November about celebrities chopping their hair off, mostly into pixie cuts, but you could trace this trend back to even a few years earlier, when model Arizona Muse stood out on the runway with her bob.
At the same time, ombre hair color has stuck around season after season as well. Emma Stone is the most recent star to showcase this look, with her stunning yet subtle copper to gold ombre that is a far cry from the early days of extreme dark to light ombre.
In considering the popularity of both these looks, I realize that what makes them so appealing is their easiness and imperfection. Unless you're a teenage girl, long hair requires a lot of attention, from deep conditioning to long blow-outs. And precision cuts are beautiful, but they too require regular upkeep. With everyone leading such busy lives these days, who needs the added stress of worrying about your hair on a precise timetable? With these relaxed looks, you can afford to go an extra week if you need to.
Don't get me wrong, I love to see our clients as frequently as possible. And as a super-organizer myself, I appreciate the client who books every 4 weeks, same day and same time. But as someone who also has to get in the back of the line for hair appointments (one of the perks of being a salon owner), I certainly appreciate having a style that doesn't frighten small children if I have to wait an extra week for a haircut. So while it's always fun to see what new trends emerge each season, easy and relaxed is one look I'm happy to see stick around.
