A scalp massage and conditioning treatment for your hair plus a mani/pedi will give you tidings of comfort and joy. Or try Lena's new Gold Facial, which will leave even the wisest of men & women asking for "myrrh, myrrh, myrrh." If you simply can't make the time for a salon treatment, pick up the products and pamper yourself at home. Tell your Tiny Tims that the fastest way to get on Santa's good list is to give mama a head and foot massage.

As selfish as it may sound, the best gift you can give to others is a joyful and glowing you. If you're just one Jingle Bell too many from turning into the crazy Target lady, then what the Dickens are you waiting for? Take a break for yourself. You deserve to enjoy the holiday season, not just get through it.

You've Got the Look

I recently saw the documentary Bill Cunningham New York (thanks to my friend and fellow blogger Fashion Gal in DC for the recommendation). The movie is a profile of the New York Times photographer who covers high society events, but who also rides his bike around the streets of New York City (at 80 years old!) taking pictures of what everyday people - aka, us common folk - are wearing. What I enjoyed about the movie was that, despite being adored by the style-makers and elite members of NYC society, his passion is for capturing what the unknown person walking down the street is wearing. He is a champion of individual style, even while finding unifying trends among the individuals.

In our business, we often use celebrities as a reference point. Jennifer Aniston's highlights, Emma Watson's pixie cut, Blake Lively's side braid. This certainly helps when a bob can mean different lengths to different people, and one person's red is another person's copper. But it's important to make the distinction between drawing inspiration from a celebrity and trying to look just like a celebrity. I admit I'm guilty of crossing that line. I recently cut my long hair after deciding I wanted Jennifer Aniston's new shoulder-length hairstyle (can't bring myself to call it a "lob" - long bob. What a horrible name for a hairstyle, magazine editors!) But after a week of adding a flat iron and two more styling products to my morning routine, I realized, sadly, that I was not Jennifer Aniston. And so I cut it shorter, to a length that felt more like me. And I love it.

The movie made me realize how much time we spend trying to replicate what we see on TV or in magazines. When really we should be seeking out that which inspires us personally, or that to which we are individually drawn. Life would be pretty boring if we all wore the same three outfits or had the same three haircuts. When it comes to style, when you go with what makes you happy and makes you feel most like yourself, then you will always be "in."

Cheers

Determined not to let the summer pass without taking any vacation, I made a quick getaway to Bermuda over the Labor Day holiday. I found a package deal at a well-known resort hotel, and looked forward to relaxing and lounging on the beach for a few days. However, I was taken aback when I arrived and was greeted with a very icy reception at check-in. This continued to be my experience over the next few days, staying at a beautiful hotel with beautiful beaches (and expensive meals), but crummy service. I wondered if it was because I was there on a package, but then realized that this shouldn't matter.

As I lay on the beach working on my tan, I had a lot of time to ponder this, and couldn't help but to make connections to my own role as a customer service provider. Some clients come in and want to get lost in a magazine for two hours, others want to spend the time discussing celebrity gossip or more personal topics with their stylist. But either way, clients expect to feel welcome and that their business is appreciated.

We recently had a frustrating experience at the salon with online reviews, where many supportive reviews were overshadowed by one bad review, and I was left feeling very jaded by the great and powerful social media. After my experience in Bermuda, I went to post an online review and saw that the hotel had 700 other reviews. It made me consider what my purpose was in reviewing. Social media has its advantages, but at the end of the day all we really want when we walk into a business is to hear, "Hey! We're happy you're here." At the end of the day, we all want to be Norm.

Hot Head

I don't need a calendar to tell me when summer starts. All I have to do is look at my hair. When the heat and humidity make me feel like the lock-mess monster, I know it's time to discuss summer hair care routines. For me, this means getting a Brazilian Blowout, so I can get rid of my frizz and avoid blow-drying. Our appointment book has been filled with BBOs the past few weeks, as everyone wants to get theirs now to get through the summer months. Since they last for twelve weeks, this is the perfect time to schedule one if you haven't yet.

For those of you who don't suffer from summer frizzin', it is still just as important to consider your summer hair care. Anyone who spends time in the sun, surf, pool, or golf course should be using a product with a Keratin Protection Factor - KPF, similar to SPF for skin. Rene Furterer has an extensive sun care line that includes pre-sun exposure products that block UV rays, a shampoo that removes chlorine and sea salt, and a conditioner that in my opinion smells just like a Hawaiian sunset.

Over these first hot days of summer, we've had a number of clients coming in to chop off their long locks. There is something so refreshing about having that hair off your neck on those sticky humid days. For those who want to keep your hair long, the good news is that summer styles are über-casual. No complicated braids or twists that require four hands to assemble. But make sure your messy ponytail says "yacht party" and not "shipwrecked" by keeping your hair healthy and shiny with a weekly deep conditioning and monthly color or gloss.

The June issue of Glamour has some fun, easy styles for long hair. Try them out, and remember the saying, "When it's hot, the best way to feel cool is to look good." (....so maybe nobody said it, but somebody should.) Stay cool!

Locks be a Lady

As someone who spends most of my day scheduling clients for multiple services with multiple people with multiple time constraints, I was blown away by the precision with which the royal wedding took place. Even the kiss on the balcony came right on schedule. And yet as elaborate and grandiose as the occasion was, in a sea of outrageous hats, Kate - now Catherine, now Duchess - looked elegant and effortless. The Duchess looked like a lady. I admit, I was hoping for a dramatic up-do. But I read that she wanted to keep her hair down so that Prince William would recognize her. After all, her long flowing locks are her signature look.

At yet as effortless as her hair looked, her hairdresser admitted that he had practiced her style so many times that he could do it in his sleep. This doesn't surprise me at all. Because, really, an effortless and natural look does not mean lack of maintenance. It means keeping your hair and skin healthy. Regular trims and conditioning for your hair. The correct products to cleanse, exfoliate, and rebalance your skin. In our busy lives, looking effortlessly put-together is something we all want. Clients tell us that they don't have the time to invest in a high-maintenance style. Wash and wear is the way they roll.

The fact is that looking effortless requires some effort. The good news is that it doesn't require a lot of effort, just consistency. Invest in the right products for your hair and skin. Don't wait for your roots or split ends to get out of control before making an appointment. Take a little time to take care of yourself. Because while we can't all be princesses, we can certainly all be ladies.
Change is in the Hair

I love spring. The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and clients are walking in the door ready to make a change. Some want to go short. Some want to add highlights to their regular color. Others just want bangs, which is really just as big a change as the other two. It's fun watching a client transform their look. I mean, who doesn't love those makeover shows? But even if you're not ready for a major change, making any sort of change can be just as invigorating. Between "just a trim" and "chop it off" are a variety of options for a new haircut. A few highlights around your face can have just as dramatic an impact as a full head of highlights.

Essentially, clients are looking for change because they are ready to feel refreshed and revitalized after the cold and dry winter. So even if you absolutely love your hair and don't see any need to change it, you can still achieve the same feeling of renewal with a spa service. Because unless you flew south for the winter, your skin is in need of exfoliation and hydration, and your body in need of a treatment to eliminate the tension and toxins old man winter has left behind. With spa services ranging from thirty to ninety minutes, there are a number of ways to change your skin from drab to fab.

For many of us, spring is a chance to get back on track with our new year's resolutions. And really, it's an even better time. Nature is awakening from it's winter hibernation - trees are budding, grass is peeking up from the ground, the scent of fresh peeps is in the air. So awaken from your hair-bernation and welcome your own spring change.
Winter Blues

Here we are mid-winter. This is the only time of year when I wish the days would pass quickly, each new day bringing us a little closer to spring. When I find myself excited by extra minutes of daylight, temperatures above forty degrees, and only a few inches of snowfall rather than another snowmaggedon, I've clearly resigned myself to the winter doldrums. It's a common experience, as we ride out the next couple of months, bundled under scarves and hats, until spring fever grabs hold and we once again can get excited about our clothes and hair.

And while you may not yet be interested in your new spring look, this is actually the perfect time of year to take care of the health of your hair and skin. The winter weather - and indoor heat - dries out our hair and skin, leaving us all in need of some major hydration and moisturizing. Scalp and conditioning treatments, plus facials and body treatments, don't just feel nice, but also help maintain healthy hair and skin. And if you'd rather hibernate than come out for regular treatments, there are great products from Rene Furterer and Suki that you can use at home.

Soon enough, spring will arrive and you'll be ready for your new color and cut. But don't waste your spring repairing winter damage. Take care of your hair and skin now, so that when the hats and scarves finally come off, you'll already have that spring break glow.
You Better Not Pout (I'm Telling You Why...)

The holiday season is filled with the spirit of giving and goodwill towards others. It's a time to get together with loved ones and share special moments, reflect back upon the year, and be grateful for what you have and generous towards those who are less fortunate. And while you're running around crowded malls in freezing cold weather, feeling as if you are running out of time to get all this goodwill done, and have had enough with Christmas music that has been playing since Halloween, I encourage you to do something good for yourself, too.

It's hard to justify doing something for yourself at this time, I know. But actually, it's the most important time of the year to take care of you. The winter weather dries out our hair and skin, we're stressed out, eating too much sugar and drinking too much alcohol. And that's all before the family get-togethers. So why wait until January 2 to start fresh? Enjoy a mini-rejuvenation now, before all the holiday photos, so you can sit back and glow as you bask in the...well, glow...of the family dramas, feeling and looking relaxed and carefree.

Three great ideas that are perfect when your time and funds are limited include an Express Facial, a Spa Pedicure, and a Conditioning Treatment with a Blow-dry. Each of these services relieves stress, replenishes moisture, and revitalizes your hair, skin and nails. Because, really, the greatest gift you can give to others is the gift of your best self. And if that doesn't cut it with your loved ones, buy them a Salon A gift card and let them find out for themselves.

Wishing you all a Happy Holiday!
<img width='1' height='1' float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">

The awful, humid summer is at last behind us and we can now look forward to my favorite season. Some of you may call it fall, but I call it Good Hair Time. Moderate temperatures, low humidity, not too dry. We can finally stop worrying about how to deal with our hair, and instead focus on how to style it. At the salon, we saw our usual mid-August "I can't stand it any longer, chop it off!" clients, and this is right around the time when they might be realizing that short hair requires more frequent upkeep than long hair. But the good news is that whether you held on to that ponytail or went short this summer, fall hair trends can work for both lengths.

If there was one clear message from the fall magazines, it's that big hair is in. At the same time, many of the photo spreads also featured simple, pulled back styles. Yet what may seem incongruous actually does work together. Both looks are relaxed and low maintenance. Forget the flat iron and the curlers, just blow-dry your hair and go.

Of course, with such a simple look, it's more vital than ever to make sure your color shines. Because simple + dull = old and tired, but simple + shiny = polished and fresh. This is the perfect time of the year to start transitioning your color from summer to holiday. Thanksgiving is only two color appointments away. Here are a few of my favorite celebrity looks for the fall, courtesy of InStyle, that are perfect examples of great color with relaxed styles:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; type='text'>In the Summertime....

If you live in the Washington, DC area, I certainly don't have to tell you that summer is here. We been suffering through record high temperatures and stifling humidity. Despite this, I have been loving my hair. Two months in, and my Brazilian Blowout has been holding up great. I don't know how I ever got by without it in my life.

Okay, enough gloating. My point is that it's summer, and that means summer hair care. If you are planning to spend time at the beach or pool, Rene Furterer has a great suncare line with pre-sun exposure products that block UV rays, a shampoo that removes salt and chlorine, and post-exposure conditioning treatments.

If you are on Team Edward - er, I mean someone who prefers to stay out of the sun, summer can still wreak havoc on your hair. The heat and humidity can leave your hair limp and lifeless, and make your scalp feel oilier than usual. Plus your ends may be feeling dried out from the sun and air conditioning. Make sure you are using the correct products for this season. Switch to a lighter shampoo, apply conditioner just on your ends, and use a clarifying product once a week to remove build-up.

Finally, if you are finding it unbearable to bare your skin in summer dresses due to bumps and blemishes, Suki has just come out with an Exfoliating Body Cleanser. This full-body version of its popular exfoliating face cleanser will remove the yucky stuff and leave your skin with a radiant glow. With the right products, you can turn this cruel summer into one where the living is easy.<div hair. But, now, my friends, the battle is over, thanks to the Brazilian Blowout.

So, what is the Brazilian Blowout? While not technically a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique, it does knock out frizz through a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex that creates a protective protein layer around the hair shaft, smoothing the cuticle. And by knock out, I mean it eliminates frizz for up to 12 weeks. Even better, the treatment contains no harsh chemicals or formaldehyde, and actually improves the condition of the hair.

The best thing about the Brazilian Blowout is that it is a hair smoothing treatment rather than a straightening treatment. Making it perfect for those of you who, like me, enjoy your waves but hate the frizz. Since getting the treatment, I have been able to wash my hair and run out the door, allowing it to air-dry to a pretty beach wave. And when I do blow-dry my hair, it is quick and effortless because my hair is so healthy. I'm no longer tugging the brush against my coarse, dry, frizzy strands.

Actually, the best thing about the Brazilian Blowout is that it's allowed me to enjoy my mornings. Instead of preparing for battle, I now just prepare breakfast.
How Green is Your Hair?

In celebration of Earth Day this week, I'd like to remind you how easy it is to go green with your haircare. At the salon, we proudly carry the Privé and Rene Furterer haircare lines, both of which are plant-based, as well as the Sukí skincare line, which uses all natural ingredients. Privé features Concept Vert shampoo and conditioner, which are certified Environmentally Preferred Products (EPP), meaning they come in recyclable and reusable packaging, and are high-yield - a 6.7 ounce can provides the same amount of use as a 13 ounce bottle of other shampoos and conditioners. You can access their Eco-Friendly Socially Responsible Mission Statement here. Sukí also uses recyclable and reusable packaging. You can check out their environmental policy here.

In addition to using environmentally friendly products, you can also reduce your energy consumption by turning off your hairdryer. Now that the weather is warming up, go natural with your hair. Plus, as the May issue of Marie Claire with Jessica Simpson on the cover shows, au natural is the trend this summer. We are now carrying the new Rene Furterer Acanthe line for curl definition which I mentioned in my last post. This is the perfect product to apply and go, leaving your hair soft and wavy, and avoiding the crunchiness that comes from so many other curl defining products.

Finally, the best way to reduce your carbon footprint is to schedule multiple services in one visit. While we love seeing our clients as frequently as possible, you can save time and gas by combining hair, nail, and skin care services. Most of these services can be performed around each other - for example, a manicure or reflexology while your color is processing. Or come in a little early for a wax service and save yourself a second trip. Turns out that green is a great color for your hair!
Goldilocks

Spring is finally here, and naturally the first thing that comes to my mind is, "Goodbye, hairdryer!" As much as I love wearing long hair again - after two years of Posh Spice inspired 'dos - the extra time and energy required to blow-dry it was turning me into Grumpy Spice. The first day of warm weather, I decided to go with my natural wave, so I used a lighter shampoo and conditioner, put in my usual styling products and let it air dry. It looked great. Then I got dressed. As soon as my shirt came over my head, my hair turned into a static cling experiment. I realized that I was getting ahead of myself. Yes, it was warm, but the air was still dry, and I should have stuck with my moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

The following day, I went back to the moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, but used the same styling products - a light hold spray and finishing serum. My hair looked great. I got dressed - still great. But at some point in the afternoon, I looked in the mirror and saw a huge mess of frizz staring back at me. So the next day, same shampoo and conditioner, but this time a curl enhancing product and strong hold pomade to help define the wave. My hair looked great. Afternoon check in the mirror, however, revealed that my hair looked flat and heavy. Day four - same shampoo and conditioner, then a cocktail of four products - curl enhancer, pomade, light leave-in moisturizer, and finishing serum. Using a little at a time, I slowly but surely achieved the right combination of curl definition, volume, and frizz reduction. It looked great.....but took me twice as long as it would have taken me to blow-dry it.

Wondering if I should just give up and try to convince everyone that frizz is the trend this Spring (hey, skinny models can get away with it), I couldn't believe my eyes when our Rene Furterer rep walked through the door with their latest product line - Acanthe, a curl enhancing shampoo, conditioner, and styling cream. The line will be available in April, but she gave me some of the cream to try. The first time I used it, it worked so well that I got a little misty-eyed. It defined the curls, but with a soft finish. I was so excited that, well, I slept in later the next morning.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: type='text'>The Mane Man

A conversation with a client today about the frustrations her teenage daughter goes through because of her high maintenance hair, and how she wishes she had easy hair like her friends, made me think of Conan O'Brien's parting remarks on his last Tonight Show: "Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." I know it may seem like a stretch to connect Conan with hair advice, particularly given his trademark pouf of a mane, but his words actually convey a wise attitude towards haircare.

I sympathize with this teenage girl. My own hair has always required a high degree of maintenance. Even after I passed from my 80's "mall bang" phase, I was still left with curly, frizzy hair that took an arsenal of equipment and product to style. My roommate in college could just wash and wear her straight blonde hair, and it always looked fabulous. It was so unfair. I started getting gray hairs young, and by 25 was coloring my hair regularly. My former roommate still has beautiful virgin blonde locks that would easily cost $200 to replicate. Ridiculously unfair.

Listening to Conan on his last night, I didn't immediately think of my hair. But it's possible to extrapolate that nobody gets to choose what kind of hair they get in life. And for those of us who didn't get the kind of hair we wanted, it's true that if we put in the extra effort and take good care of our hair, amazing results are possible. So I need four different types of conditioner depending on the time of year. So blow-drying my hair involves a finely tuned strategy of sectioning, brush placement, and proper level of dampness before initiating contact with the blowdryer. It's not easy, and it's not fair, but when I see the end result, it looks great. And I'm happy.

You Say You Want a Resolution

A new year has begun, and once again we start with the best of intentions. Lose weight, quit smoking, finish that project, etc. Whatever resolutions you may have laid out for yourself, I encourage you to add one more: to be selfish. By which I mean to take the time to take care of yourself. I know I frequently say this, but this time I write as someone with an admission to make. The truth is that lately I have had some bad hair days. It's something I would almost be too embarrassed to admit, except for the fact that I did something about it and am so pleased with the results.

As long as I've been recommending scalp and conditioning treatments to clients, I've very rarely taken advantage of them myself. Often, I did not want to impose on the stylists. But last month I began experiencing some major hair issues - dryness plus itchy scalp - that my regular products were not able to remedy. And so I asked for a treatment. I noticed an immediate improvement, and wanted to kick myself for the time I wasted worrying about my hair when all I needed was 30 minutes to fix the issue. After my treatment, I took home a bottle of Rene Furterer Karite oil, applied it to my ends a few times a week before I went to bed - as an essential oil extract, it absorbed quickly and left no residue on my pillowcase - and after I shampooed the next morning, my hair felt better than ever. My bad hair nightmare was over.

Similarly, I have learned from our estetician Lena the value of a regular facial. I always thought a facial was something that you did maybe once a year. When Lena told me I should be getting one every five weeks, I thought she must be joking. But I decided to commit to a schedule - I usually end up at every 7 or 8 weeks - and I can't believe how much time I end up saving each day when all I have to do is some light maintanence rather than my previous routine of agonizing over my many skin issues. Plus, because the facial removes toxins and increases stimuation through head and scalp massage, I not only look better, I feel better too.

Having only started to make the time to take care of myself towards the end of 2009, I absolutely look forward to continuing this practice in the new year. I encourage all of you to do the same. Once a month, find time in your schedule to do something good for yourself. Or simply add a scalp treatment, conditioning treatment, or facial onto your regularly scheduled color or cut appointment. Just think how much easier it will be to tackle those more challenging resolutions when you look fabulous and feel great.

The Most Wonderfully Hectic Time of the Year

Black Friday may get all the attention, but for the salon it is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving that has us in a frenzy. With clients trying to squeeze in an appointment before heading off to meet the family, our relatively casual Wednesday turns into an all hands on deck/full court press/ready, set, go whirlwind of activity. Since this is just the beginning of the holiday mayhem, I offer a few tips to help make your holiday hair days go as smoothly as possible.

1. Schedule as early as you can. This is pretty much a given, but if you have little flexibility in your schedule, it is even more imperative. Morning and evening appointments fill up quickly.

2. If your holiday event falls in between your regular color schedule, consider a gloss or conditioning treatment to refresh your color. A gloss will cover faded locks while also adding shine. A conditioning treatment will make dry, dull hair look healthy and rejuvenated. In fact, I'd recommend both services as they can be done together.

3. Set up multiple services in one visit. We offer nail and skin care services, so you can make the most of your time by scheduling a manicure while your color is processing or adding a quick eyebrow wax before or after your hair service.

4. Yolanda has been working in the Chevy Chase area, and is someone we've had our eye on for while. An excellent stylist and a former salon owner, she is a great addition to our team.

Also, we are now offering facials and body treatments! For five years we've been committed to providing top quality hair services, but when we met esthetician Lena Levanda we were so impressed by her talent, experience and philosophy that we built a spa room just for her. Lena believes in using natural methods and products to achieve healthy skin. She uses the suki skincare line, which contains natural and organic ingredients - a perfect complement to our haircare lines, which also focus on a healthy hair and scalp using plant-based ingredients. In fact, clients have started following their facial appointments with scalp treatments, for a complete re-balancing, restorative, and rejuvenating experience for both face and hair.

Another bonus is that Lena offers foot reflexology and upper body massage. At 15 or 30 minute increments, it is a great service to enjoy either while your color is processing, or if your stylist is running behind. Or, of course, if you just need a little stress relief and don't have time to commit to a 90 minute service.

With these new additions coming so close to the holidays, we are offering discounted packages of spa + hair + nail services to either help you get ready for an event or help you relax after one. Check our website for the full list of spa services, and check the package deals by clicking here. With these great new additions, we certainly feel like Christmas came early this year. And I'm pretty sure our clients are on the "good" list.

Are You Ready?

We've reached that time of the year when people stop counting forward to schedule their appointments, and start counting backward, e.g., "Let's count back from Christmas to time my colors correctly". I was caught a bit off guard when I began getting these requests this past weekend. With mild temperatures and great hair days now that the humidity has passed, I've been a bit oblivious to the fact that we are actually in the fall season. Not even the allure of patterned tights and cashmere sweaters have managed to distract me from admiring open-toed shoes while sipping my iced lattes.

But fall is here, and Thanksgiving is less than two color appointments away. Before things get hectic, like we know they will, it's a great time to plan for your holiday hair. If you're still in transition from your summer color, now is the perfect opportunity to try that darker shade, or some lowlighting. This way, you have time to decide if it's the look you want to present at the family gatherings, with all those cameras, or if it needs some more tweaking.

If you've changed your styling routine this fall - so long, airdried, carefree locks; hello, blow-dryer and flat iron - be sure that you have the right tools. Are you using thermal protective protects before applying all that heat to your hair? Have you done deep conditioning treatments to rehydrate your hair from any sun damage?

This is a great time of year for hair. Between the summer heat and humidity, and the cold, dry winter air creating a static mess of our mane, we have this moderate, perfect period of good hair days. But as with anything, prevention is key. By taking the time now to prepare your hair for the coming months, you can avoid those last-minute hair emergencies. Giving you more time to focus on your shoe shopping.

Washington Hair

So, the humidity has my hair in a permanent state of frizz; school is back in session, leading to an increase in traffic; and Labor Day is just around the corner, signaling the end of summer. Yet I couldn't be more excited, because in the middle of all this, the September issues have arrived! While Vogue sets the industry standard with page after never-ending page of beautiful and luxurious clothes for fall, I was very excited to read an article in the new issue of W magazine about hair salons in Washington, D.C.

While the article focused on salons close the White House, it provided some interesting insights on style in our area. Not surprisingly, despite some differences in preferences among Republicans and Democrats, on the whole we remain a fairly conservative city in our style choices. But I was happy to see the article mention salons in the U Street and Chevy Chase area, and how they are raising the coolness bar in DC. The only thing I found to be frustrating was the emphasis on the celebrity hairstylists who fly into town to give $300-$950 haircuts. With such a wealth of talented stylists living here who can perform the same work, if not better, for a much more reasonable price, why the need to outsource?

Interestingly enough, the article that followed was about a new documentary by Chris Rock called "Good Hair." Examining the relationship between African-Americans and their hair, Rock said he was inspired to do the film after coming across an international hair show at a hotel in which was staying. As someone who has never ceased to be amazed by hair shows - each time I feel like Charlie entering the world of Willy Wonka, if Willy Wonka were a hairdresser - I totally understood Rock's desire to make this film.

Hair shows are a serious business, requiring significant capital to produce and providing ongoing education, but they also celebrate beauty and artistry. I think that Washington is realizing its potential as well as a city that can allow its movers and shakers to do important work and look great while doing it. Let's face it: when you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you get along better with others. And Bi-partisanship is a trend that works for everyone.

Anniversary Toast

Next weekend marks not only the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, but also a far more important milestone - the 5th year anniversary of Salon A! While the time has really flown by, in reflecting back upon the past five years, I realize how many invaluable lessons I've learned about running a small business, working with hairdressers, and disassembling printers to find the source of a paper jam.

We have certainly had our share of both good and bad hair days, figuratively speaking. But the thing I am most proud of is that we have continued to stay true to who we are and who we set out to be. Before we opened our doors, we wrote down our mission statement and our vision, and have used these words to guide every decision we have made since then. From product lines, to hiring employees, to marketing promotions, the first question - and sometimes also the last question - has always been whether our decision aligns with who we are.

I have also come to realize how important it is to have a mission statement for your hair. Okay, maybe a mission statement is a bit extreme, but the intent is to ensure that your hair reflects who you are. After five years, I still get excited when I see a client walk out the door with a hairstyle that completely suits her personality. And if I had a dollar for every time I heard a client say "I feel like me again" as she's checking out, well, I'd be writing this from my beach house.

This being said, sometimes who we are can evolve. Right now, we are evolving at the salon by introducing a new category of services. Construction is currently underway on a spa room, and we will soon be offering facials and massages. When we opened the salon, our goal was to focus on hair. Five years later, we are excited to be able to incorporate spa services into our vision without compromising our commitment to quality hair services. And, of course, our commitment to our wonderful, loyal clients, who have brought us this far. Cheers to you!

A Midsummer Night's...Highlight

We knew it was coming. No matter how much we tried to deny it, or hope that this year would be different, the inevitable summer lull is here. Every July through mid-August, business at the salon slows as clients are either away for the summer or off on vacation. But this seasonal downturn in business has a major upside in that this allows us more time to spend with our other clients. So often, when we're busy, it's easy to fall into the routine of "the usual" color and cut. But having some extra time provides a great opportunity for the stylists and clients to explore possibilities for fresh looks - from a subtle change in color to a different way to style "the usual" to a completely new cut. Further, it's great to have the time to discuss issues or concerns that clients may have about the health of their hair and which products they're using.

There is something about this time of year. Maybe because the summer lull presents us all with a chance to evaluate how the year is going so far, and to consider how plans and expectations have worked out. With everyone holding their breath for so long on the economy, clients are starting to come in ready to exhale, have a little fun, and try something new. As the trend shifts from blunt cuts to loose shags, easy curls, and an overall relaxed look, these new styles reflect the current social attitude. Plus, if you're stuck in town this summer instead of hitting the beach, the least you can do is look like you've been hanging in the Hamptons or strutting through South Beach. With a casually cool hair style and a little self-tanner, no one will know the difference.

Towards the end of August, things will begin to get more hectic as everyone is getting ready to go back to school and work. So I recommend taking advantage of this down time, and get more "bang" for your buck.

Summer Stock

Summer is officially here, bringing with it the two most pressing concerns for every woman: Finding the right pair of summer sandals, and figuring out what to do about "summer hair." It seems like summer is the season where people struggle with their hair the most. It's hot and sticky outside, so should you chop your hair off, or keep it long so you can wear it up? How can you get away with not having to use hot styling tools, but still look polished? Must fun in the sun always lead to dry hair and faded color? And the number one question - what to do about frizz?

You're on your own with sandals. But the solution to your hair concerns is: products. Do you have the right products for your summer hair? Generally, you don't need the heavy products you use during the winter months. If you're using an intensive conditioner, try switching to a lightweight cream rinse. But if you're out in the sun a lot, the UV rays can be just as damaging to your hair as dry winter air. Rene Furterer has a line of pre- and post- sun exposure products that offer keratin protection (like SPF for your hair) and moisture-replenishing ingredients. If you're in the pool a lot, be sure to use a clarifying product regularly to remove chlorine build-up.

Frizz, of course, is the ultimate summer hair challenge. As I mentioned in my last blog, frizzy hair is the trend for the summer. But frizz in a "I was just hanging out at the beach all day" way, and not a Roseanne Rosannadanna way. Whether you're trying to manage your frizz, or would rather skip the trend and eliminate frizz altogether, using the right conditioner is key. The Myrrhea line from Rene Furterer is made from avocado oil and contains myrrh, which seals the hair cuticle to prevent frizz. And if you're putting your hairdryer and flat iron on summer hiatus, the Prive Curl Activating Creme is a great product to hold your curls or waves in place. Whether you decide to go long or short with the length, remember that the right products will be the key to a good hair summer. Well, and the right sandals.

Take It Easy

Finally, the news we have all been waiting for - messy, frizzy hair is in!! Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but flip through any fashion magazine this month, and you will find most models wearing hairstyles that are decidedly unpolished and frequently not smooth. In other words, see you later, flat iron! The June issue of Vogue (Cameron Diaz on the cover, a perfect example of casual cool) features an article about the comeback of the messy mane. I guess it shouldn't come as a total surprise. Last year at this time, the style was all about prim, proper, and polished. This season, we may still be wearing the same clothes as last year (recessionista, frugalista, etc), but a more relaxed hairstyle makes the look fresh and modern. It's so effortless, how can we not be excited?

Speaking of effortless, a new product line from Privé is making it easier than ever to be environmentally responsible and have fabulous hair. Concept Vert features a shampoo and conditioner that is sulfate and paraben free, plus contains no phthalates, gluten, PABA, mineral oil, paraffin, DEA, TEA, or artificial colors. I admit that I don't even know what half of these things are, but I do know that I have tried these products and love them. What it does contain is Açaí Berry, an antioxidant that protects and strengthens the hair, and Babassu Oil, a gentle moisturizing ingredient for both dry and oily scalps. Plus, the containers are recyclable and reusable. We just got the testers in the salon last week, and will have the products available to sell later this week. Easy styles and easy products that go easy on the planet should make for a summertime where the living is.....well, easy.

New York State of Mind

A few weeks ago, Ann and I went to the International Beauty Show in New York City. I had been looking forward to the show to see new products and styles. But I was also looking forward to having a few days off, and doing some serious shopping. I boarded the train with a list of salon goals in one hand and my personal checklist of items to buy in the other.

Among the many platforms of artists demonstrating new hairstyling techniques and trends, there are always one or two that stand out from the pack. This year, the artist who really caught my attention was Nick Arrojo. All of his styles were based on the concept that they could dry naturally or be blown out, and look fabulous both ways. It made sense for so many reasons. As we head into the summer months, there are definitely going to be those hot, humid days where the last thing you want is a blow-dryer blasting heat on your head. But, of course, some days you need that smooth, polished look. Either way, the styles he displayed had a lot of movement and ease about them. It was so refreshingly low-maintenance.

With an extra day in New York and beautiful weather to enjoy, we headed to Soho. I have to admit that as much as I pore over every fashion magazine, red carpet event, and Gossip Girl episode, nothing can compare to people-watching in New York for inspiration. The freedom, creativity, and confidence with which people express themselves through their clothes and hairstyles is fascinating. Springtime in New York has such an energy about it that even I found myself walking down the street with a little more attitude. And while I am happy with the purchases I made, the most valuable thing I brought back with me was this inspiration. I definitely think it is a look that works for everyone.

A New Sensation

Someone generating lots of buzz for her style right now is Susan Boyle. If you don't know, she is the woman who has become an overnight Internet sensation from her audition for Britain's Got Talent. Actually, if you don't know, please stop reading and check her out right now. She has drawn so much attention because, quite honestly, she is a frumpish woman with an amazing voice. I am not being mean when I describe her appearance this way. In fact, I am fascinated by how much discussion her appearance has generated. I have repeatedly heard and read about whether or not Susan Boyle should get a makeover. The most recent opinion provided was by Robin Givhan, the fashion reporter for The Washington Post. I usually read Givhan's reports on the designer collections at the New York and Paris shows, so I was taken aback to read an entire front-of-the-Style-section article about a 47-year-old Scottish woman who was unknown to most of the world just two weeks ago.

But one line in Givhan's piece really stuck with me. She wrote "The point of a proper makeover is not to look like someone else but the best version of yourself." I totally agree. While we enjoy staying on top of the latest celebrity looks and trends at the salon, I think there is an important distinction between replicating a celebrity and drawing inspiration from a celebrity. I admit I love seeing a dramatic makeover on TV as much as anybody else. But in the salon my favorite makeovers are when we take what the client already has and enhance it. I know it's a successful makeover when I see the client glowing as she leaves. This tells me that not only does she look good, but she feels good. She still feels like herself, but as Givhan said, the best version of herself. As for Susan Boyle, sure I could see a more polished look for her. But watching her on TV, I can't help but notice that she is already glowing. And you just can't make that up.

American Idol

The number one topic of conversation at the salon this week has been Michelle Obama. She generally ranks high on the list, but this week we had both the "fashion summit" between her and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy as well as the Washington Post article about Mrs. Obama's hairdresser - finally revealed after months of speculation. The "Deep Throat" of our industry, to be sure. I find it all fascinating, mostly because I can't help but wonder "what would I do?"

What would I do if all of a sudden the outfit I pulled out of my closet each morning was subject to national scrutiny? What would I do if I had a host of designers available to me - would I choose based purely on aesthetics, or consider the nationality of the designer, the price, whether the fabric is eco-friendly and the seamstresses are paid a living wage? Would I be allowed to have a bad day hair, or would I need to send an advance team on all overseas trips to determine the pH level of the water so that I know which shampoo to bring?

Considering all this makes me admire the confidence with which Michelle Obama carries herself. For an accomplished woman, she must surely wonder sometimes why her strongest statements are often her fashion statements. And while I don't always agree with her fashion choices, I appreciate that she does make a statement. Not necessarily one of hemlines and patterns, but rather one of being confident and comfortable, unafraid to try new things but also knowing who you are. A statement that can apply to your clothes, your lifestyle, and even, yes, your hair.

Recessionista

It's the latest buzz word, essentially meaning to be frugally chic. Some say it's just common sense - hello, don't buy new stuff, use what you already have. And while this is true, recessionista means to use what you have, but in new ways. Let's face it, we're all used to wearing these pants with that shirt, it's easy and familiar. Look at your closet with a fresh pair of eyes, and dig out that stuff that has migrated to the back. I experienced this myself last week after rediscovering a jacket I had forgotten all about. I got so many compliments on it that I think I convinced myself it was brand new.

But enough about clothes, this blog is about hair. What exactly is recessionista hair? It is not suffering through bad hair days as you stretch out your appointments. There are in fact ways to pinch your pennies and still look fabulous. For example, try a multi-dimensional color so that your root line doesn't grow back so obviously. If gray roots are your challenge, try a cut and style that covers that pesky center part, or consider a partial color or highlight to cover just the gray. If your product junkie habit needs to be reigned in, go for a lower-maintenance cut that works with your natural texture and requires fewer touch-ups.

Speaking of products, recessionista does not mean using cheap products. It means using fewer products, but the right products. If you color your hair, use a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner. If you are outdoors a lot, use a sun-protection product to help prevent fading. And remember that healthy hair is attractive hair. A scalp treatment and/or a clarifying product will restore shine and body. Above all, keep in mind that recessionista is not depressionista. There is no need to be stressed about your hair at this time with so many creative options. Besides, stress is bad for your hair.

Shake it Up

I recently enjoyed a surprise weekend getaway for my birthday. Initially, I was not happy about this. Crazy, I know, but it had been a busy month and I was feeling a bit cranky, so I was actually stressed to not have control over the situation. Control is my middle name, after all. But once I got to Vegas and soaked up some rays by the pool, I wondered what I had been so worried about. Getting away for a little while gave me a fresh perspective, helped me to relax, and ultimately to be more productive when I got back.

This week we were lucky enough to have the head of education for Rene Furterer in the salon teaching a class about scalp treatments. Over the years, we have had the opportunity to receive training from Rene Furterer, so I assumed I would already know everything he had to share with us. I knew the class would be beneficial to our newer staff, and decided to sit in just to observe their learning. But watching him demonstrate a scalp treatment, I felt as if I were seeing it for the first time. I realized that it had actually been a few years since I had watched the process, and that there was in fact information I had forgotten or overlooked.

What these two experiences taught me is that it is so easy to get into a routine where you do what you usually do and know what you think you should know. At the salon, we certainly enjoy the routine of a busy Saturday, when everyone is booked and both the stylists and clients know what to expect - usual color and cut, let's do it again in 4-6 weeks. But I encourage you to try something outside of the routine. Whether it's adding a few highlights around the face instead of your regular color, or trying a different product, the slightest variation can make a big difference. Looking at our models Alma and Senaida after their scalp treatments and feeling envious of how healthy and shiny their hair looked, I realized that I could certainly shake up my routine for a whole 30 minutes a week in the interest of fabulous hair.

Tech Support

We created our website shortly after we opened our salon in 2004. I like our website, and I think it represents who we are very well. For the past four years, the only tweaking we've done has been to update our menu of services and special promotions. Recently we began working with a talented young photographer to increase our catalogue of hair photos, which has led to more frequent updates to the website. Then last fall I started this blog for the salon. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I thought it would be a great way to discuss products and trends, and give clients an opportunity to discover what's new in between their visits.

Now we are working on adding a Twitter link to our website, so that we can provide information about the salon on a daily or even hourly basis, for example, letting clients know about any last-minute openings. I also started sending email newsletters to clients who have signed up to receive notice of promotions and specials. When I sent our Valentine's Day newsletter last week, I discovered a new feature from our service provider that immediately links the newsletter to our Twitter status. Upon learning this, I thought back to our early days, when we would have to plan mailings a month or two in advance, allowing time for printing, assembling, and licking those stamps. I was amazed at how easy and quickly we can reach our clients now. But at the same time, I had a major case of technology overload. I seriously felt a bit dizzy trying to process it all.

Stepping away from the computer, I took a walk around the salon, stopping to chat with each client - finding out what was new in their life, gossiping about the latest celebrity scandal, and enjoying a job that lets me talk with people all day. It centered me, energized me, and reminded me that being connected does not necessarily mean being online. This is truly the essence of who we are and what we do. Making clients look great, but also establishing and reinforcing relationships - in person. Of course, technology is a wonderful thing. It allows us to maintain our client relationships outside of the salon. I love that writing this blog feels like a continued conversation, and that we can adapt to clients' busy schedules with last-minute updates and newsletters which they can read on their Iphones. But most of all, I love seeing our clients come through the door and spend some time with us. Facebook is great, but face-to-face is even better.

The Big Chill

I sit down to write today after spending all morning watching the snow fall, enjoying the quiet peace that snowfall brings while at the same time thinking about how I could find that same kind of peace on a nice warm beach. The need to stay indoors has given me the opportunity to go through the latest issues of all the fashion mags, pouring over the new trends in hair this season. I have to say that I do not see one obvious trend emerging (Short! Straight! Volume!), but what I do notice is an overall relaxing of looks. Hair is softer and less styled. I had already begun to notice this at the recent red-carpet events - hair was less fussy yet not messy, simple but pretty, and dare I say mature?

I think this reflects what is going on in society. Normally in difficult times we look towards the past for comfort, and you see a lot of nostalgic looks reminiscent of the "good old days". But the atmosphere this time around is different - change is upon us, and it brings with it excitement and energy fully on display last week at the inauguration of our new president. We can not help but to look towards the future. Except the future we see is not one of "2001" or George Jetson, but rather one much more firmly grounded in reality. We know we have to get to work the meet the challenges before us.

And what does this have to do with hair? Well, as we pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off (to paraphrase a certain recent speech), we are refocusing our energy, simplifying our lifestyles, and reorganizing our priorities. Of course, we still want to look good. Frankly, I think this is the best part of this "natural yet polished" look - being in style just got a whole lot easier. Work with what you have, simplify your routine, and use products that keep your hair healthy. If you can start with a good hair day, just imagine how much more you can accomplish with that extra time.

Hair Fitness

Well, it's mid-way through January, and I must say I impressed. For the past two weeks, the normally quiet work-out room in my building has been packed every time I've gone to exercise. I'm used to seeing this the first couple days of the month, but usually by this point people have already ditched the resolution and I have the equipment pretty much to myself. Maybe it's the frigid temperatures outside that are keeping everyone indoors and antsy. Maybe - like for me - exercising is a way to avoid passing my free time at the mall, spending money I should be saving. Or maybe there is a genuine commitment to better health.

Of course, with more people in the work-out room now, I have become more conscious of my appearance. When it was just me, worn-out clothes and no makeup was fine. Now that I always seem to end up on the treadmill next to the cute guy who lives down the hall, I find myself taking a little extra time primping before going to exercise. Of course, not everyone has the convenience of running upstairs after their work-out to clean up. Which leads to the question of how to handle post-workout hair. If you're in between blow-outs or have errands to run before heading home to shower, a dry shampoo is the perfect product to freshen up your hair. I recommend the Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo, which uses rice starch to absorb the oils on your scalp, restoring body and movement to your hair.

If you are planning to wash your hair right after your work-out, and aren't aiming to impress the guy on the treadmill, applying a deep conditioning product to your hair before exercising is a great way to get extra conditioning time. This works best for those who can put their hair up in a ponytail, applying the conditioner only to the ends so as not to have product dripping down your scalp once you hit your target heart rate. I recommend the Rene Furterer Karite Oil or Prive Leave-In Treatment, but we also offer other great choices depending on your hair type and degree of dryness. With these few simple tools in your gym bag, you can cross two resolutions off your list - having a great body and having great body (in your hair).

Happy New Year

Well, the new year has blown in - literally! Wow, did we ever have an exceptionally windy New Year's Eve. The wind-blown look was definitely the way to go for party hair that night. Now, of course, the New Year ritual of "out with the old, in with the new" has begun. It seemed like every client who came in the salon today experienced their hair service as a cathartic process - washing hair was also cleansing away toxins and stress; cutting hair was letting go of last year's problems; coloring hair was beginning the year with a fresh start.

January has actually become one of my favorite times of year at the salon. The holidays are exciting, but at some point everything gets so hectic that clients literally seem to be running in and out, shouting "Happy Holidays" as they rush off to the next errand on their checklist. Come January, the atmosphere is more relaxed, allowing us time to actually catch up with our clients. There is a positive energy in the air, as we anticipate everything this new year can offer us. Even with the uncertainties that lay ahead, there is still the feeling of possibility.

What about the hair news for 2009, you're probably wondering? The looks appear to be simplified and streamlined, reflecting an overall lifestyle change. But there is plenty of time to discuss that later. For now, I simply want to wish you all the best for the new year. Take the time to enjoy this moment, and allow yourself the chance to refresh, revitalize, and renew.

Top Hair 2008

The January magazines have arrived in the salon, and I hate to admit it, but they make me a bit emotional. The September issues get me all giddy with excitement - thick as a dictionary, a good ten pounds worth of fall and winter fashion, usually chock full of luxurious, beautiful things I have to have. But in the midst of the holiday mayhem come the January issues - skinny, limp, almost always full of simple, muted looks. It's as if they're saying "sorry, reader, but face it, you're broke after the holidays, you're exhausted, the only glimmer of excitement I can offer you are the resort wear collections, which you know you're never going to need because you ain't going anywhere." As I flipped through the latest arrival this afternoon, I had stop and remind myself that we are still in the midst of the holiday and year-end festivities, and that some acknowledgement must be made of the top hairstyles we've seen this year.

The trend this year was that there was no trend - anything goes - but in looking back over the year in hair, my choices for the top styles follow three clear patterns. First, the major trendsetters of last year - Rihanna and Victoria Beckham, both of whom led the chin-length bob revolution of 2007 - continued to go shorter this year. Victoria is now sporting a pixie, gamine cut, and Rihanna, well, her style looks different at every red-carpet event. But she rocks the short, punk look with a versatile short on the bottom, long on the top cut. Bravo to the risk-takers of 2008.

Second, I must commend two long-haired celebs who took the plunge by going shorter - not as dramatically as Victoria and Rihanna but with equally stunning results. Both Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Walsh revitalized their look with longer bobs, ending just above the shoulder, a great style for someone who wants a change but isn't ready to go chin-length short. A major thank you to Gwyneth, whose long overdue haircut reminded us that she is a movie star and not a hippie.

The third and final top style acknowledges those who resisted the big chop-off of 2007 and kept it long. Blake Lively, aka Serena on Gossip Girl, whose long, wavy blond locks are, quite honestly, to dye for. And Beyonce, who just recently debuted her new album and new look - still long hair, but straight and sleek. Her hairstyle was all over those January magazines, so way to be a trendsetter, B. I can't wait to see what looks 2009 brings us. My fingers are crossed that the February issues offer me something exciting.

We are the Champions

I'm so excited to learn that Self magazine has named Bethesda as the healthiest city for women in its annual survey. While I know that healthy hair was not a contributing factor, you cannot deny the connection between a healthy body and healthy hair.

Speaking of healthy hair, the December issue of W magazine (Blake Lively on the cover - love that Gossip Girl! xoxo) has a great article on how the latest breakthroughs in science are focused on maintaining healthy hair. I was so happy to see a product I mentioned in my last entry - Rene Furterer Myrrhea Mask - noted in the article for its anti-frizz properties. The article also discusses the importance of scalp treatments in making hair stronger. I can tell you that some of my favorite moments at the salon have been when clients who had been dealing with hair loss or damage come in after a few scalp treatments and tell me how happy they are with the results. Of course, you don't need to wait until you have an issue to try a treatment. It's a great boost when your hair starts to feel blah from the winter weather.

Being named healthiest city is a big honor, and also a big responsibility. We bumped San Francisco from its top spot, and I'm sure they'll be working to get back to number one next year. But rest assured, Bethesda, that Salon A will do everything we can to keep your hair healthy.

Hathead Season

I usually write this blog at home, where I can give my full attention to each entry. However, this has been such a busy week at the salon, that I am just now finding time to write - on a Friday night at work, sneaking a few moments while our evening clients are being finished. The topic today is an easy one, because it's what everyone's been talking about: It's cold outside!

Winter has certainly made its entrance, even if it is technically still fall. With the temperatures so low, we are all bundled up, and while I love to show off my purple cashmere gloves, I absolutely hate what this weather does to my hair. Between scarves, hats, and hoods my hair is a static mess! Not to mention the valuable lesson I learned about turtlenecks (if you put one on in the morning, do not change your mind about what to wear!) I almost hate to admit this, but I have to metro out to a dinner party this Saturday, and all week long I've been worried about what my hair will look like when I get there. What is the perfect combination of haircare and outerwear that will help me deal with the cold and still look fabulous?

Fortunately, I have discovered a secret weapon in Myrrhea Silkening Fluid, part of a new product line from Rene Furterer. Made of Myrrh extract and avocado oil, the fluid nourishes and smooths hair. It is supposed to be applied before styling, but I use it both before and after. As someone who frequently suffers from "Goldilocks syndrome" (this product is too heavy; that product is too light), I have found the fluid to be just right for these cold wintery days and nights. It is part of a line that includes a Myrrhea shampoo and mask. This line has arrived just in time to ensure that when people say you look warm and fuzzy this winter, they are talking about your sweater and not your hair.

Shop Talk

Right around the time I told myself I would sit down and write a blog entry, I turned on the TV and saw that Oprah was featuring Dr. Oz and his new beauty book. Of course, I had to watch. The focus of the show was not beauty trends, however, but rather how all the things going on inside your body manifest themselves through your skin and hair. This is something I've written about before - how stress can affect your hair - but I was surprised to learn just how many internal issues are revealed on our outside. One of the guests they featured had lost a significant amount of hair in the past six months and couldn't figure out why, as she had not experienced any major stress or illness recently. Dr. Oz ran a blood test and found that she had elevated levels of allergies and hormones that warranted further tests.

This woman's story made me think about the fact that most of us see our hairdresser more frequently than we see our doctor. And in many cases, we tell our hairdressers more about what's going on in our lives than we do our doctors. It makes sense. When you sitting in a paper gown in a sterile room, the last thing you want to do is discuss what's been going on in your life over the past year. Compare this with someone playing with your hair, massaging your head, making you feel pampered and beautiful. Of course your stylist is going to know all the intimate details.

One of the things I love about the Rene Furterer line that we carry at the salon is that it uses essential oils to create and maintain a healthy hair and scalp. So if there is something going on with your hair, you can treat it rather than just cover it. Of course, if there is a more severe issue, you should see a doctor. But don't think that just because it's not a major problem that it can't be corrected. After all, fabulous hair is one of everyone's favorite things.

'Tis the Season

I have been debating blog topics for the past couple of days, but honestly, it's impossible to focus on anything other than the Presidential election. To be witnessing history is truly an amazing feeling. Not to mention the enormous sense of relief that the longest election cycle ever has finally ended. Now, as we look forward, you may be saying, as I did today when booking an appointment, "Holy cow! Thanksgiving is only three weeks away. Where did the time go?" The past couple of weeks have been full of so much uncertainty that it's been impossible to see beyond the day-to-day. And while all is not resolved overnight, we must still allow ourselves to step back, take a deep breath, and find time to enjoy this season we are about to enter.

As you start filling up your holiday calendar with social events and family commitments, I encourage you to take the time to do something for yourself. At the salon, our book fills up quickly with color appointments just before the holidays, as everyone wants to cover that gray and look their best before seeing the family. But it's just as important to feel your best, too. An easy way to do this is with a scalp treatment or conditioning treatment. What could possibly top laying in the shampoo chair with the massage on, while receiving a scalp massage, then having your hair blow-dried to a silky, soft, shiny finish? I recently did this myself for the first time in a long time, and I haven't been that relaxed since I don't know when. And my hair looked and felt great.

Whether it's to calm yourself before a big event, or to unwind after one, take the time to do something for yourself. After all, making history is a big deal. We all deserve a little pampering.

Our Hair, Our Selves

I recently saw on TV an interview with Robin Roberts from Good Morning America, in which she discussed her battle with breast cancer. The cameras followed her over a period of time - at her chemotherapy appointments, at home, and behind the scenes at GMA. It was amazing to watch her go through what looked like an emotionally and physically exhausting process, and still remain professional and graceful while on air. I was really struck, however, when she said that the thing that caused her the most distress was losing her hair. My initial reaction was, frankly, shock. This woman was fighting a life-threatening disease, and she was concerned about losing her hair? But the other day at the salon, the daughter of a client came in for a haircut. We have not seen the client for a while because she is going through chemo. I asked the daughter how her mother was holding up, and was happy to hear that everything was going well, except that her mother missed her hair.

I know I shouldn't be surprised. I work at a salon. I see how important hair is to women. And if you saw the insane number of products in my bathroom, you'd think it was the only thing that mattered to me. I guess I just thought that it would be such a minor concern if you were battling cancer. But your hair is part of your identity, especially for women, and it would only make sense to be upset about losing it. I can't presume to know what emotional journeys women like Robin and our client have gone through. I do know that while I have those days where I may ask myself, "Does this really qualify as a hair emergency?", watching Robin's story is a reminder that beyond the latest trends in colors and cuts, what we do at the salon serves a meaningful purpose.

Damaged Goods

There are normally two times of the year when we have a high volume of conditioning treatments at the salon: winter and summer. In both seasons, the natural elements can strip the hair of moisture, necessitating deep conditioning. But lately we've been noticing a year-round need for extra conditioning, and there is clearly one culprit: celebrities.

Okay, I'm joking, but just a little. Celebrities change their hair all the time - short, then long the next month, curly then straight, blond then brunette, and the rest of us are trying our best to keep up. But all those quick changes - particularly bleaching, flat ironing, and extensions - can be damaging to your hair. The reasons celebrities always look great is because they have stylists attending to their hair every day (well, maybe not every day, but some of them never have roots showing, so I'm just saying....). And you know what those stylists are most frequently doing? Conditioning, conditioning, and conditioning.

To keep you looking paparazzi-ready, we have great conditioning treatments at the salon to target a variety of issues. If your hair is over-processed, try a Rene Furterer conditioning mask. If your color is looking dull, a Pravana shine treatment will restore lustre. If you can't live without your flat iron, Prive's Thermal Protection Detangling Spray is essential before that heat gets anywhere near your hair.

The November issue of Vogue has a great article on this topic. It's the one with Reese Witherspoon on the cover, featuring her new hair style.

Make It Work

Saturday was a busy day at the salon, thanks to the many Homecoming dances going on. Our team did an awesome job making the ladies look great for their big night.

I decided to unwind that evening with my friend Jessica and her baby Lily. It had been a busy day for her as well, and she asked me to watch Lily while she took a quick shower. When she re-joined us, her hair was combed back wet, and over the course of the evening it dried into a perfectly smooth style. And I have to admit, I was jealous. My hair would never do that. The hard truth is that some people are just born with great hair. The rest of us, well, we're the ones who keep the beauty industry in business.

Jessica's hair care routine: wash, towel dry, comb.
Result: Beautiful blond silky straight hair. Virgin blond, too, untouched by color, unlike my naturally dull brown and prematurely gray hair which has been colored too many times to count.

My routine (all products are Rene Furterer): shampoo - either a color-treated shampoo or volumizing shampoo (in the summer, also a weekly Curbecia shampoo for oily scalp); condition - a lightweight cream rinse in summer, conditioning mask in fall/winter, and occasionally a clarifying rinse to remove build-up; styling - Vegetal spray for light hold, then blow-dry, then finish with a pea-size amount of Karite leave-in conditioner to seal any frizz and a dab of pomade to hold in place.
Result: Natural looking, beautiful wavy hair (if I do say so myself).

Of course, I wish I could pull off her wash-and-go style. But rather than dwell upon the unfairness of it all, I have to accept and work with what I was born with. The fact is, Jessica and I both have great hair. Mine just takes a little longer to get there.

Taking Stock of Great Hair

Once again, my alarm clock went off this morning just in time for me to hear the latest dismal news about stock markets in Japan and London. It's a terrible way to emerge from my much-needed beauty sleep. At work, the constant stream of updates about the US stock market on my MSN homepage leaves me so stressed out that I can't even enjoy reading the celebrity gossip of the day. I have to frequently remind myself that my worrying is not going to change the situation, and that I should focus only on that which I can control. More importantly, I must remember that too much stress will eventually affect the condition of my hair.

We are seeing this more and more at the salon. A client with normally healthy hair notices that each time she brushes or washes her hair lately, she's pulling out more strands than usual. We ask her three questions: Did you have a baby recently? Does this type of hair loss run in your family? Were you dealing with any stressful situations in your life three months ago? The last question more often than not reveals the root cause of the hair loss.

When we are stressed out, we tend to not take care of ourselves. We sleep less, eat poorly, maybe drink or smoke more. You can feel how this affects your body fairly quickly, but the effect on your hair takes a few months to manifest due to its growth cycle. The salon has treatments that can strengthen and repair your hair, and I like to use these treatments even when I'm not stressed out, as part of an overall healthy hair regimen. But looking at my calendar, I notice that three months puts us pretty close to New Years Eve. And that is my biggest incentive to not let current events stress me out. If there's one thing I can control, it's that I will celebrate the New Year with fabulous hair.

The Right Stuff

I was in the middle of a seemingly never-ending internal debate about my first blog topic when I went to the New Kids on the Block concert last Thursday. I was a major fan of the group back in the day, and as soon as the concert started, it was like I was transported back in time. I became the screaming 14-year-old girl who lost her voice declaring her love for Joey at her first NKOTB concert, hoping he would hear me across a stadium full of thousands of other screaming girls. And in my mental image of my younger self, the first thing I thought about was my hair. Every day was a good hair day for me back in 1988. I was rocking the spiral perm and had perfected my bangs with massive amounts of teasing every morning. I must have gone through a can of hairspray a week keeping those bangs in place. This was a look I was proud of. But if I walked into work with that same 'do today, everyone would be checking their calendars to see if they missed Halloween.

Most of us are continuously on the lookout for that "perfect style". For some, they find it in high school and stick with forever (if this is you, it is urgent that you keep reading). Others have phases - the high school hair, college hair, first job hair, mom hair, etc. Many of us change our hairstyle when there is a milestone in our life. This is natural, but it need not be the only time you re-evaluate your look. Of course, it's nice to not have to think about your hair as you're rushing around in the morning. But it's more important to be able look in the mirror before you leave each day, and say "My hair looks great for the person I am today." My perfect style at 14 was not the same as at 18 (fortunately for the environment, the bangs came down), at 22, 26, or...well, we don't need to get specific with the number. In fact, my perfect style this summer was not even my perfect style for right now.

Even while I was lost in time singing along to "Hanging Tough", I couldn't help but notice how the Kids had gotten older. Donnie wore a hat for most of the show. But when the hat came off, his receding hairline was a reminder that his "perfect style" of a thick, full mane gelled sky-high wasn't possible anymore. But with his clean, close cut, he looked good. It was perfect for today.
